Case study · SMS spoofing · Malvern

A failing hard drive was backed up just in time, and the scam lesson that came with it paid off a fortnight later.

What happened

A laptop's clicking noise turned out to be a failing hard drive. Two weeks after the repair, the customer received a text: “Your Westpac card has been compromised, call 1300-XXX now.” She almost called.

What we did

  • Backed up the whole drive the same day, before it failed completely
  • Showed her how SMS spoofing works as part of the visit

The outcome

She remembered the lesson, called Westpac on the number on the back of her card instead, and confirmed it was a scam.

“It literally saved me from handing over my details.”
Susan Powei, Malvern

The lesson

Scammers can make texts look like they're from your bank. Never call the number in the message; use the one on your card.
