Scam alerts

Plain-English warnings about the scams we're seeing across Melbourne, and exactly what to do if one reaches you.

High alertText message

Fake toll road texts

Texts claiming you owe a small toll (Linkt, EastLink, CityLink) with a link to pay. Toll companies won't text you a payment link. Log in to your account directly instead.

High alertText / WhatsApp

'Hi Mum, new number' messages

A 'child' messages from a new number and soon asks for money for a bill. Call your child on their usual number before doing anything.

High alertPhone call

Fake bank fraud team calls

Callers say your account is compromised and ask you to move money to a 'safe account' or read out a code. Hang up and call the number on your card.

Watch outComputer pop-up

Pop-up 'virus alerts' with a phone number

A screen says your computer is infected and to call 'Microsoft' or 'Apple'. It's fake. Close the browser (or restart) and never call the number.

Watch outText / Email

Parcel delivery 'missed' notices

Messages about a parcel that couldn't be delivered, asking for a small redelivery fee. Check tracking only on the official Australia Post app or website.

Watch outSocial media

Celebrity 'investment' ads

Online ads or articles showing well-known Australians promoting crypto or trading platforms. These endorsements are fake.

These are long-running scams we see often. New alerts are added as they appear.
