Scams · 4 min read

Paid a scammer or let someone onto your computer? Act in this order to limit the damage.

In the first hour

  • Stop all contact. Hang up, don't reply, and block the number
  • If someone has remote access to your computer, switch off the Wi-Fi or unplug the internet
  • Call your bank on the number on your card and ask them to stop or recall payments

Later that day

  • Change your email password first (from a device you trust), then banking and myGov
  • Turn on two-step verification for email
  • Call IDCARE on 1800 595 160 for free identity support
  • Report it at cyber.gov.au (ReportCyber) and scamwatch.gov.au

Get your devices checked

Scammers often leave remote-access software or malware behind so they can come back. A technician can remove it, check your email for hidden forwarding rules, and set up protection so it can't happen again.

We can come out urgently, 24/7.
